Classic Solitaire: Martha Solitaire

Martha Solitaire is a variation of Klondike Solitaire, with an interesting twist- half of the cards in the tableau are face down, with the other half face up.

Aim:

The aim of Martha Solitaire is to build ascending suit sequences, in the foundation zone.

How to Play:

The opening tableau has:

  • 12 manoeuvre stacks, with 4 cards in each

and

  • 4 foundation stacks, that start with the Aces.

In the manoeuvre zone, form descending sequences of alternate color. Multiple cards forming a run can be moved at once.

Although multiple cards can be moved in one go, only a single card can be moved into an empty column.

Example:

Suppose that the initial deal looks like this:

Martha Solitaire 1

The following moves are possible:

  • 2 of Hearts up to the foundation.
  • 8 of Diamonds onto the 9 of Clubs

Start by moving the 2 of Hearts...

Martha Solitaire 2

This exposes the Jack of Hearts.

We can now move the 10 of Clubs onto the Jack...

Martha Solitaire 3

And then we can move the Jack & 10 sequence onto the Queen of Spades...

Martha Solitaire 4

Later on in the game, we empty a column...

Martha Solitaire 5

The rules in Martha state that you can't move a sequence to an empty column (For example, we can't move the Queen, Jack, 10, 9) sequence. Instead we can only move one card...
