Note Studio
Release 3.0.0
(release date: 14 July 2005)
3.0 is a major update from version 2.0.
Release Notes
Well, after a VERY long wait, version 3.0 of NoteStudio is finally out!
Firstly, I'd like to apologize for the delay. Some of the underlying
technology in 3.0 took WAY longer than we were expecting to get 100% right.
And every time it looked like it was ready, another bug would show up, right
at the last minute. It was very frustrating!
After missing several deadlines, we decided we would get 3.0 out would be if
we knuckled down, and focused only on version 3 to the expense of everything
else. This has meant that our support has been lax recently, and that we
haven't been on the notestudio forums very much. (We also couldn't devote
much time to resurrecting the forums when they got hacked). If you were
affected by these, I apologize, things should be back to normal now (And
hopefully you agree 3.0 was worth the wait)
So whats new in 3.0? It's been so long since the last release, it's hard to
remember what's new, until we run version 2, and cringe!
Off the top of my head, some of the more important changes include:
- The ability to share books with other people on a network.
- MUCH more stable encryption.
- Better looking library.
- Sample books provided when you first start using NoteStudio.
- Better HTML output.
- Indented bulleted lists on the computer.
- Recent Changes can show all changes in the last X days.
- You can store books on a USB flashdrive.
- Automated backups on shutdown
- A Mac OSX version!
There are a lot more changes. The best way to see all the improvements is to
download the new version for yourself. But before I give you the link, I've
got 3 things to tell you...
Firstly, how to install...
To start with, please decrypt any books you have in version 2. The
encryption scheme has changed slightly (to make it much more robust), so you
need to decrypt in version 2, install, and then re-encrypt your books.
You should then do a manual backup ( The data is stored in {Palm}\{Palm
UserName}\NoteStudio). And then just run the install exe.
DO NOT UNINSTALL VERSION 2!
During the upgrade a tool will be run, to automatically convert your data to
3.0 format. If any problems occur during the conversion, a message box
should appear, and you should email support@dogmelon.com.au, and we will
work with you to fix the problems.
If all goes well, you should see all your data working on windows. Set the
conduit to PC overwrites Handheld, and then sync TWICE. After that, you can
use NoteStudio as before. (I know that's all a bit convoluted, but it's the
saftest way to upgrade. It will more-than-likely work if you skip a step,
but it's safest not to).
Secondly, I'd like to cover dogMelon's immediate plans from here. Whilst NS3
is a huge improvement over version 2, it doesn't contain half the
improvements we would like it to (particularly on the Palm). Our main
emphasis was on getting the sharing to work, as well as making NoteStudio
more robust.
Now that 3.0 is out, we plan to return to our normal release cycle, with
updates every month or so. So if a feature you want isn't in yet, don't
panic, it might be right around the corner!
Finally, I'd like to thank all the beta testers. The testing you have all
done has been great, and there wouldn't be a NoteStudio 3.0 without you!
Thanks!
OK thats enough talk, we've made you wait long enough already! You can
