FAQ

How do I restore my data from a backup?

Note: This answer refers to the backups Note Studio performs automatically (after prompting you first) each time it is shut down. It does not refer to backups made by exporting the library to XML.

Locating the Backup

First - you need to find where your backup is being made to.

If you are using the standalone version, this is usually:

C:\Documents and Settings\{login name}\Application Data\notestudio\backup

If you are using the palm-enabled version, this is usually:

C:\Documents and Settings\{login name}\Application Data\notestudio\{palm username}\backup

If you want to find out the exact name, simply shut down Note Studio and do the backup. When the backup is complete, it will report the location to which the backup was made.

In your backup directory, you will see a number of directories of the form:

YYYY-MM-DD

Each directory represents a date (YEAR-MONTH-DAY) on which a backup was made. Within each directory is a number of zip files. There is one zip file per collection. This means you can restore any individual collection.

Restoring the Backup

1. The Collection is Already In Your Library

If the collection you want to restore is still in your Note Studio library, then you can determine its file location. To do that:

Once you identify its location, you can restore a backup by:

Ultimately, a collection should contain:

If you are still running Note Studio, you should then press 'Refresh'. Now the restored collection should be available.

2. The Collection is Not In Your Library

If the collection you want to restore is not in your Note Studio library, then you can restore it as follows:

Sync With Your Palm (handheld-enabled version only)

After restoring a collection, your next sync with the Palm should be one-way (Desktop overwrites Handheld). Otherwise, because you are restoring older data, your Palm will contain newer data and will try to overwrite the data you have just restored.
